PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin-film magnetic head having good heat radiation characteristics by optimizing the shape of a toroidal coil layer. SOLUTION: The width size and the area of a backmost second coil piece 56A are set larger than a coil piece 56B before it in a track width direction, and thus heat generated in the thin-film magnetic head is efficiently released to the backmost coil piece 56A. Since a temperature increase in the thin-film magnetic head is suppressed more than conventionally, the projection of the thin-film magnetic head caused by thermal expansion is suppressed.
