PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for anaerobically treating sludge capable of shortening a decomposition process by anaerobic bacteria by lowering the viscosity of sludge and accelerating the conversion of organic solid matter and soluble hardly decomposable organic matter to low-molecular weight compounds, decomposing and liquefying the organic solid matter in sludge more efficiently for a short time and gasifying organic matter contained in sludge not only to reduce the occurring amount of sludge but also to accelerate the occurrence of a methane gas. SOLUTION: In the anaerobic digestion of sludge, viscosity lowering treatment is applied to excess sludge as pretreatment and hydrolytic enzyme is added to the treated excess sludge not only to increase the amount of gas produced but also to reduce the volume of produced sludge.
