Poor quality extruded material produced during an extrusion run, in particular during the start-up phase and considered as unsuitable for use, is diverted away from the production line(1) and fed into a shredding machine(5). Diversion of the material is effected by operation of servo motors which also initiate synchronous operation of the shredding machine(5). The shredder speed can be varied to alter the size of the granules. Independent claims are included for: a) an extruded product diverting and shredding machine which is included in an extrusion line(1) and comprises a product diverter with drive unit and a roll with projections for shredding extrudate; b) an extrusion plant comprising an extruder with die, calibration unit(3), haul-off unit and the claimed diverting and shredding machine.
