The fluid medium such as water is directed at high kinetic energy onto the surface to be treated by exploding a gas mixture or by continuous combustion thereon. The gas mixture can contain oxygen and a combustible gas detonated by a detonator. The water and gas mixture are repeatedly supplied to an open-ended housing where the gas mixture is ignited and the water jet-blasted out.
