PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a shutdown method of a solid polymer type fuel cell F capable of continuing a stable operation for a long period without deteriorating cells or a cell stack even with generation start/generation halt repeated.

SOLUTION: In transferring from a normal generation state to a generation halt state, partial vapor pressure in a cell C is made lower than that in the cell C in the normal generation state.
