PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an XML document analysis method, an XML document retrieval method, an XML document analysis program, an XML document retrieval program, and an XML document retrieval device by which an XML document can be retrieved at high speed. SOLUTION: The XML document retrieval device 200 is provided with; a retrieval condition input part 211 for inputting a retrieval condition; a document structure data determination part 215 for determining whether each of a plurality of document structure data arrayed in accordance with a tree structure in the appearance order of a plurality of elements constituting an XML document satisfies the retrieval condition or not; a relevant character string extraction part 216 for extracting character strings within character string data related to document structure data satisfying the retrieval condition only when it is determined by the document structure data determination part 215 that document structure data satisfies the retrieval condition; and a relevant character string determination part 217 for determining whether character strings extracted by the relevant character string extraction part 216 satisfy the retrieval condition or not.
