PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image sensor for setting resolution at multi steps easily, and to provide a reading device and a method for setting the resolution. SOLUTION: The image sensor includes a plurality of photoelectric conversion elements and a channel select switch group for turning on and off between a charge output unit of each photoelectric conversion element and a common signal line, and performs on/off control on the channel select switch group sequentially while synchronizing with a clock pulse signal. When a resolution designation signal, a resolution designation timing setting signal, and a resolution designation term setting signal are entered, the resolution of the image sensor is set according to an on/off pattern of the resolution designation signal at the rising or falling time of the resolution designation timing setting signal while the resolution designation term setting signal is turned on.
