PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a dehydrating and sintering method wherein the dehydration and the sintering of an optical fiber preform are carried out by using one heating furnace in common. SOLUTION: In the heating furnace 200 capable of suitably heating the whole or a part of a furnace core in the longitudinal direction, the whole of the optical fiber preform 10 is charged in the heating furnace and the whole of the heating furnace is heated in the dehydration of the optical fiber preform 10. In the sintering of the optical fiber preform 10, the optical fiber preform is charged from one end side of the optical fiber preform 10 into the heating furnace and a part of the heating furnace is heated.
