PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To apply binding to a sheet bundle in the state of being kept consistent. SOLUTION: When the sheet handling device performs two-place staple binding of the sheet bundle S formed on a compile tray 105, an eject roll 131 is moved from a retracted position (reference to (a)) to an advanced position (reference to (c)) for purging an air layer existing between the sheets constituting the sheet bundle S, and then it is retracted once to an intermediate retracted position (reference to (b)) and moved to the advanced position again for gripping the sheet bundle S. The sheet handling device performs staple binding with an end wall 151 retracted in the state of the sheet bundle S being gripped by the eject roll 131. When it performs one-place staple binding of the sheet bundle S, the eject roll 131 is moved from the retracted position directly to the advanced position for gripping the sheet bundle S.
