PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of accurately adjusting a frictional load by a retard roller in separating document sheets. SOLUTION: This paper feeder comprises a paper feed roller 6 feeding the document sheets and a document sheet S separating mechanism separating only one sheet of these document sheets S when the plurality of document sheets are double-fed by the paper feed roller 6 and feeding the sheet to the downstream side. The document sheet separating mechanism comprises a separating roller 7 feeding the document sheets to the downstream side in contact with the document sheets S, a retard roller 8 installed oppositely to the separating roller 7 on both sides of the fed document sheet S, a retard roller shaft 9 pivotally supporting the retard roller 8 through a torque limiter, and retard roller braking mechanisms 11, 12, and 13 stopping the rotation of or rotating a retard roller shaft 9 in a document returning direction or releasing the retard roller shaft.
