A mechanical seal at the distal end of the pullrod (9) is of the non-contact type and consists of a non-rotating sealing element (30a) plus a rotating element. The oil spray or mist entering the top end of the spindle (3) passes down the oil supply tube (20) and so through the tool holder (13) oil channel (14a) to the tool (12). The rotating seal element is fixed to the pullrod (9) as against the non-rotating element (30a) which is fixed to the toolholder (13). The non-rotating seal hangs from a spring (60) and thus elastically on the pullrod (9) so as to move lengthways and parallel to the spindle (3). A ribbed annular membrane on the hanger spring (60) is fixed at its inner rim to the pullrod (9) and fixed outwards to the sealing block. The inside surface of the pullrod facing the seal is spirally grooved and the spindle itself uses its drainage way to remove surplus oil mist building up on the seal face opposing the pullrod.
