PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain driveability and reduce a pumping loss in switching the combustion system in an internal combustion engine having a switchable combustion system according to the operation state of the engine. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine operable with two combustion systems of compression ignition combustion and spark ignition combustion, is equipped with an intake throttle valve taking air in the internal combustion engine, a detection means detecting torque variation of the internal combustion engine, a combustion switching means switching the combustion system by determining the operation state of the internal combustion engine, and an air intake throttle valve control means. The air intake throttle valve control means sets the air intake throttle valve to a first opening when the operation state is within the region of the spark ignition combustion, sets the air intake throttle valve to a second opening when the operation state is within the region of the compression ignition combustion, and sets the air intake throttle valve to an intermediate opening between the first opening and the second opening when the operation state is within the intermediate compression ignition region between the spark ignition combustion region and the compression ignition combustion region.
