PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To uniform a catalyst layer and avoid the decrease in reaction efficiency due to the deviation of gas distribution in a steam reformer which has a reaction chamber for generating a reformed gas by reacting a raw material gas with steam. SOLUTION: In the reaction chamber for generating a reformed gas by reacting a raw material gas and steam, a catalyst layer filled with a particulate catalyst is placed; and the inner surface of the reaction chamber in contact with the catalyst layer is dimpled so that the particulate catalyst can be in surface contact with the recessed part of the dimpled surface.
