<p>Chlorinated hydrocarbons are obtained by contacting a feed containing an olefine, hydrogen chloride and molecular oxygen in the vapour phase at elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising copper deposited on activated alumina, the latter having been heated prior to deposition of the copper to 800 DEG -1400 DEG C. for at least 2 hours as claimed in the parent Specification the catalyst also containing an alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) salt or hydroxide; it may also contain at least one salt of iron or a rare earth metal (defined as a metal of atomic number 57-71 inclusive). An example reacts ethylene, HCl and air in the presence of alumina containing Cu, Ce and Mg. Propylene is also specified as a suitable olefine.ALSO:A catalyst suitable for oxychlorination reaction (see Division C2) comprises copper deposited on alumina, the latter having been heated to 800-1400 DEG C. for at least 2 hours (cf. the parent Specification), the catalyst also containing an alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) salt or hydroxide; it may also contain at least one salt of iron or a rare earth metal (defined as a metal of atomic number 57-71 inclusive). Specified alkaline earth metal, iron and rare earth metal salts are the chlorides, nitrates, formates, oxalates and acetates. The alumina, after the heat treatment, may be impregnated with a solution of copper chloride and then dried, or impregnated with a solution of a copper salt such as the nitrate or formate and the salt converted to oxide by heating or by hydrolysing and drying. Incorporation of the alkaline earth metal salt or hydroxide into the catalyst can be carried out before or after the heat treatment and before, after or simultaneously with the deposition of copper. The iron or rare earth metal salt can be incorporated before, after or with the alkaline earth metal salt or hydroxide. In an example the alumina contains Cu, Ce and Mg.</p> |
