The invention relates to a method for the production of alpha -methylstyrene by anionic polymerization of an alpha -methylstyrene monomer. Said method successively comprises the following steps: a) a stage in which a solution containing the alpha -methylstyrene monomer and an aprotic apolar solvent is prepared; b) a stage in which the solution prepared in a) is neutralized including the addition of an efficient amount of at least one monofunctional organometallic initiator to said solution in order to neutralize the protic sources of the solution prepared in a); a stage in which the solution obtained in b) is cooled to a temperature of less than 0 DEG C; d) a stage in which polymerization is initiated, including the addition of a predetermined amount of said monofunctional initiator to the solution cooled in c); e) a stage in which polymerization is propagated, including the addition of an aprotic polar solvent to the solution prepared in d); f) a termination stage including the addition of a protic polar solvent to the solution prepared in e).
