PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a light receiving element using titanium dioxide harmless to a human body, and provide its simple manufacturing method. SOLUTION: In the case of the light receiving element 10 having three-layer structure of ITO-TiO<SB>2</SB>-Ti, a TIO electrode 13 and a Ti electrode 12 are made into a positive side and a negative side, respectively, and a voltage of several tens volt is applied across the electrodes. Visible light of about 600 lx of illuminance is radiated from the ITO electrode 13 side. The visible light penetrates the ITO electrode 13, and a light receiving part of a titanium dioxide layer 11 is irradiated with the light. As a result, a photocurrent is induced in the layer 11, and a current of about several tens mil-amperes flows in a direction from the ITO electrode 13 to the Ti electrode 12. The light receiving element 10 can be applied to a sun light sensor, a memory part of a high density optical memory, etc. A titanium dioxide layer 11 is formed on a titanium substrate surface by heating a surface of the titanium substrate. By stacking a transparent electrode on a surface of the titanium dioxide layer 11, the light receiving element 10 can be constituted. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
