PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heat treatment method for increasing the elongation of an aluminum composite material obtained by compounding hard particles into an Al-Si-Mg based aluminum alloy. SOLUTION: When an aluminum composite material obtained by compounding hard SiC particles into an Al-Si-Mg based aluminum alloy is heat-treated, cooling from a solution treatment temperature to an aging treatment temperature is performed as oil cooling to make the cooling rate slow (embodiment 3 to 6), or solution treatment is performed as two-step treatment to reduce the treatment time (embodiment 7), so that the precipitation amount of Mg<SB>2</SB>Si as a hard intermetallic compound to form into an inhibitor for elongation in the aging treatment stage is reduced, and the elongation is remarkably increased compared with that in the cases where ordinary heat treatment is performed (comparison examples 1 and 2).
