A system for automatic opening of a refuse bin (2) as it is raised out of an underground store (1) has the hinged lid (5) of the bin connected to the hinged cover (3) by elastic ties (4). As the bin is raised out of the storage position the covers are automatically swung into the open position. The elastic ties are adjustable for length to cater for different sizes of refuse bin.
