PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To always make gear shift feeling good judging appropriately the power-on/off by the up and down shifting regarding the control unit of an automatic transmission. SOLUTION: The up-shifting control or the down-shifting control is done in accordance with the control rule of the speed change corresponding to the conditions of power-on and power-off of an internal combustion engine. The control line when using the power-off control is set up separately by the up-shifting control line LU1, LU2 and the down-shifting control line LD1, LD2. In the up-shifting and the down-shifting control lines, the control lines LU2, LD2 used for speed control under power-on condition are set up differently from those LU1, LD1 used for speed control under normal traveling condition, in such a manner that the control lines are determined as coupled with the effect of hysteresis.
