PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a composite substrate having surface smoothness usable as a plastic substrate which is used in a liquid crystal display or the like and high productivity. SOLUTION: A method for manufacturing the composite substrate having a surface roughness (Ry) of≤2μm comprises laminating a releasable metallic foil having a semi-cured thermoplastic resin formed on both sides of a prepreg obtained by impregnating a fiber cloth with a thermosetting resin composition or coating the thermoplastic resin composition on the fiber cloth and drying the coated fiber cloth, curing the resin, and then peeling the releasable resin sheet. It is preferred that the releasable metallic foil has a surface roughness (Ry) on the transfer side of≤2μm, a thermal linear expansion coefficient at 150°C to 180°C of <30 ppm, and a Young's modulus of≤50 GPa.
