PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method of lithium tetraborate which restrains generation of a twin and crack, and which is capable of making it easy to evaluate the quality such as crystal defects contained in the lithium tetraborate single crystal, which is suitable for the use in optical converting elements such as a wavelength converting element, etc., and optical materials for ultraviolet laser light. SOLUTION: In this method, by Czochralski method, a seed crystal is contacted with the lithium tetraborate molten liquid surface with its crystal orientation plane (001), and the temperature gradient is set 30-200°C/cm between the molten liquid surface and 10 mm above the melt liquid, and 5°C/cm-50°C/cm for further above that range, and the seed crystal is pulled at a speed of 0.1-2 mm/hour.
