PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tunnel-shaped continuous heat treatment furnace including a heating room for heating a metallic article and a cooling room for cooling the article, which is connected to the heating room, more specifically, to provide a cooling method in the cooling room, and to provide the cooling room preferable for carrying out the cooling method. SOLUTION: The cooling room 3 has an inner wall made from a carbon material as in the heating room 2, and has an atmosphere of a neutral gas as in the heating room 2. The cooling method comprises stirring the gas to increase a cooling power, which has been under taboo, and thereby contacting the atmospheric gas not only with the heat-treated metallic article but also positively and actively with the inner wall made from the carbon material in the cooling room 3, to quench the article while keeping neutrality of the atmospheric gas.
