PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving an image pickup element which can shorten the time for reading out a signal. SOLUTION: Thinning-out processing, which reads out signal electric charges accumulated in a sub-photosensitive part 40b by thinning out them, is applied. An image signal processing circuit 20 applies pixel interpolation to the sub-photosensitive part 40b, to which the thinning-out processing is applied by referring to the signal electric charges accumulated in the sub-photosensitive part 40b in its periphery. The time for reading out the signal electric charges accumulated in the sub-photosensitive part 40b is shortened.
