PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To lessen the detection error of pixel defects, even using a solid state imaging device having color filters. SOLUTION: A vertical line delay unit 1 and a horizontal line delay unit 2 make coincide in time of pixels in a specified range of a picture based on image signals inputted from a solid state image sensing device 92A having color filters. A brightness signal former 3 forms brightness signals showing brightness components about the time-coincided target pixels under detection of pixel defects and adjacent pixels in the specified range. Upper, middle and lower pixel defect detectors 4-6 detect the existence of pixel defects of the target pixels, based on the brightness level difference between the target pixels and adjacent pixels, and thresholds for the white dot and black dot detections. Upper, middle and lower pixel defect correctors 7-9 correct the pixel defects, if detected. The formed brightness signals are used for detecting the pixel defects and hence the pixel defect can be exactly detected, even if the signal level of pixels for every color filter varies.
