PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide transmission apparatus for a bicycle which performs a transmission operation even under inertia running of the bicycle. SOLUTION: A transmission apparatus T for a bicycle includes a drive sprocket 30 rotary driven by a crank shaft 11, and a multistage driven sprocket 40 rotating always in conjunction with a rear wheel and drivingly connected to an output shaft 24. The transmission apparatus T also includes a chain 48 interconnecting both the drive sprocket 30 and the driven sprocket 40, and a transmission shift mechanism M2 for positioning the chain 48 among a plurality of transmission sprockets 41 to 47. The driven sprocket 40 is placed so as to rotate always in conjunction with the output shaft 24. A one-way clutch 32 for transferring the normal rotation of the crank shaft 11 to the drive sprocket 30 is placed in a power transmission system from the crank shaft 11 to the drive sprocket 30.
