PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress generation of a registration deviation. SOLUTION: At the starting time, the thermal printer presses a platen roller 21 into pressure contact with a heating element array 23 of a thermal head 20 via a shift mechanism 25, and also connects the platen roller 21 to a transfer motor 16 via an electromagnetic clutch 53. In this state, the heating element array 23 is made to heat and the transfer motor 16 is reversed. Consequently, the platen roller 21 and the heating element array 23 slide in contact with each other, and a peripheral surface temperature of the platen roller 21 becomes uniform. A deformation of the platen roller 21, or a feed rate variation of a color thermal recording paper 10 can be suppressed. As a result, the generation of the registration deviation can be suppressed.
