PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producingα-methylstyrene, by which a high cumyl alcohol conversion can efficiently be obtained at a low cost. SOLUTION: This method for producing theα-methylstyrene from cumyl alcohol in the presence of activated alumina by a dehydration reaction is characterized in that the concentration of an organic acid in the reaction raw material comprising the cumyl alcohol is 10 to 1,000 wt.ppm. As a preferable concrete example, the method for producing theα-methylstyrene, which is a part of a method for producing propylene oxide, involves the following processes. An oxidation process for oxidizing cumene to obtain cumene hydroperoxide. An epoxidation reaction for obtaining propylene oxide and cumyl alcohol from the cumene hydroperoxide and propylene. A dehydration process for dehydrating the cumyl alcohol to obtain theα-methylstyrene. A hydrogenation process for hydrogenating theα-methylstyrene to obtain the cumene. COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
