PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem such that in the case of a papermaking machine using a size press as a size-coating method, a size flow rate is proportional to a paper making speed and unit weight after changing paper grade, and thus if the size flow rate is calculated based on that the flow rate is proportional only to the papermaking speed, a water content at an entrance of an after dryer can not be estimated accurately. SOLUTION: This method for controlling the papermaking machine is provided by calculating an absolute dry coating amount of the size after changing the grade of the paper by taking that the size flow rate after changing the grade is proportional to the ratio of paper making speeds between the before and after changing the grade to the power ofαand also to the ratio of absolute dry unit weights between the before and after changing the grade to the power ofβ, and estimating the water content at the entrance of the after dryer after changing the grade by using the obtained absolute dry coated amount. The coated amount of the size after changing the grade can be estimated in a good accuracy even in the papermaking machine using the size press, and as a result, the accuracy of estimation of the vapor pressure of the after dryer after changing the grade is improved.
