PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small fuel cell, in particular, a small direct methanol type fuel cell light in weight without taking up much space, and having a sufficient output characteristic without causing leakage of a fuel. SOLUTION: This small fuel cell is so structured that, by using a proton electrolyte film formed by filling a porous film with a proton electrolyte as a substrate, a plurality of unit fuel cell elements each having a pair of electrodes on both its surface are serially connected through a conductive path penetrating the substrate; and the electrolyte films constituting the unit fuel cell elements adjacent to one another are insulated by an insulation material layer. The fuel cell is characterized by that, by using the proton electrolyte film formed by filling the porous film used for the small fuel cell with the proton electrolyte as a substrate, a plurality of the conductive paths penetrating the substrate and an insulation layer are formed by thermocompression bonding when the base material of the porous material is a thermoplastic polymer or by press-bonding in a precursor state when the base material of the porous material is polyimide after filling fine pores in the porous film without being filled with the proton electrolyte with an insulation substance.
