A label applicator (10) is of the type for separating labels (L) from a continuous carrier strip (W) and applying the labels (L) to an object positioned at the applicator (10). The applicator (10) includes a frame (12), a supply roll (14) operably mounted to the frame (12) for supplying the carrier strip (W) having the labels (L) thereon and a separator (16) for removing the labels (L) from the carrier strip (W). The applicator (10) includes a rewind roll (20) operably mounted to the frame for rewinding the carrier strip (W) after the labels (L)e been removed therefrom. The supply and rewind rolls (14,20) configured to move the carrier strip (W) through the applicator (10). A rewind assembly has a motor, a pivoting arm (132) and a sensing assembly (146) cooperating with the pivoting arm (132) . The sensing assembly is adapted to sense the presence or absence of a sensed element mounted on the pivoting arm (132) as the arm moves from a first home position to a position other than the home position.
