<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus in which a considerable high quality image output is obtained even in a compensation mode with priority on processing time required for a compensation, and interruption of image formation is suppressed as much as possible, even in a state of use when the temperature inside the apparatus is varied by the minute. <P>SOLUTION: Deviation quantity in a first compensation mode with priority on compensating precision is stored as records for the past 5 times for each apparatus interior temperature range (#4). In the second compensation mode with priority on the processing time required for the compensation, the difference between the measured result and an average value in the record for the corresponding temperature range is derived (#7 to #9). Furthermore, this difference is multiplied by a reliability coefficient for the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction and the compensating amount is determined (#10 to #11).
