PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer and an ink cartridge employed for the printer which can reliably process data such as a remaining ink amount even when a memory element mounted on the ink cartridge has a small capacity. SOLUTION: In a printer 1, a sequential-access-type EEPROM having a small memory capacity is employed as memory elements 80 mounted on ink cartridges 107K and 107F. The memory element 80 stores data such as a remaining ink amount as 8-bit data. A print controller 40 of the printer 1 also has an EEPROM 90 for storing data relating the ink cartridges, and stores data such as a remaining ink amount as 32-bit data. When the cartridge is not changed, 32-bit data are used, and when the cartridge is changed, the following control is performed based on the data in the ink cartridge 107K.
