The position of a moving piston (14) within a cylinder (12) is measured by detecting the pressure (P1,P0) in the cylinder region. Two openings (30,32) are provided at specific areas in the cylinder and connected to a pressure monitor (D3), which is in turn connected to an evaluation unit. The pressure lines (26,28) and/or the cylinder areas which are not traversed by the piston are also connected to pressure monitors (D1,D2) which are connected to the evaluation unit.
