An optical sensor uses an evaluator in which from the transit time of a transmission light pulse the distance of an object can be determined, and the evaluator (8) is assigned a detection unit (8a) and a selection unit (8b), where in the detection unit (8a) several reception light pulses are registered for each transmitted transmission light pulse, and in which the selection unit (8b) can select the reception light pulses registered in the detection unit (8a) and the selected reception light pulse is used in the evaluator (8) for determining the distance.
