A heat-sensitive element contains an optionally pre-treated carrier with a positively-working coating including: (a) a phenol resin; and (b) an N-imine. Independent claims are also included for production of the element by applying to the optionally pre-treated carrier a solution containing (a) and (b) and optionally also substances absorbing IR of wavelength 750-1300 nm and undergoing transformation on heat application, surfactants, dyes, contrast-improving pigments, plasticizers, siloxanes or acidic polyvinylacetals and then drying the coating; image formation on the elements by IR irradiation or imagewise heating followed by removal of the irradiation or heated portions using an aqueous alkaline developer; and heat-sensitive compositions comprising organic solvents, phenol resins, N-imines and optionally additives.
