A composition and method for alleviation of an allergic response by regulation of resistin-like molecules alpha or beta(RELMalpha or RELMbeta) expression. RELMS are also disclosed as markers for assessment of an allergic patient's status, for example, monitoring inflammation and/or tissue repair in a lung or airway of an asthmatic patient. Regulation of RELMS is involved in the pathogenesis of allergic lung inflammation and other allergen-induced conditions. The discovery of the involvement of RELMalpha and RELMbeta in the asthma mechanistically links the pathogenesis of insulin resistance and obesity, known to involve RELMS, with asthma.
