The assembly for plain (1) and flanged (3) pipe ends consists of a mobile compression collar (11) and an elastomer seal (8) with a rim which is compressed between the collar and the flange. The body (15) of the seal has at least one recess (26) to allow for expansion of the elastomer material when compressed, e.g. an annular groove in the inner or outer radial surface of the seal. The seal can also incorporate a rigid ring to limit the radial expansion of its rim when compressed.
