A microwave oven operates for cooking rice in particular in the following manner. The oven's source (11a) of microwaves is operated for a first period at a first power level, the first period being terminated in dependence on the output of the humidity sensor (17) meeting a predetermined criterion. The source (11a) of microwaves is then operated at a second lower power level for a second period set in dependence on the length of the first period. Finally, the source of microwave (11a) is operated at a third power level greater than said lower power level for third period set in dependence on the length of the first period. <IMAGE>
