The trough has a detection unit (11), arranged in proximity with a frame, detecting presence of an animal e.g. cat, within the frame. Set of electromechanical connection units (16-21) controls displacement of two protecting covers, such that the covers are moved to their opening position upon detecting presence of the animal. The connection units move the covers to their closed position upon detecting absence of the animal.
