The pad has a cushion (14) positioned against a side (18) of a plate (14), and movable between an X-ray tube (40) and an image receiver (42). The plate provides rigidity to the cushion for compressing organ (10) e.g. breast, of a patient. The plate is extended in a horizontal plane perpendicular to a thoracic cage of the patient, and spreads tissue of the patients organ presented to X-rays. An independent claim is also included for a radiographic apparatus comprising a compression pad.
