PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an explosion-proof battery separator for a lithium ion battery, reducing or eliminating an inconvenient result such as thermal runaway. SOLUTION: The battery separator for a lithium ion secondary battery comprises a micro-porous membrane of a thermal plastic material, with a thickness of less than 25μm, and an adjuvant mixed into the micro-porous membrane or coated thereon. The adjuvant, in an effective amount, is a material adapted to reduce or eliminate energy concentrations around the separator.
