The protective device protects the edge (5) of a vehicle door (1) with a protective batten (14) which retracts into the door when not in use. It has a guide in the form of a guide shaft (11), in which the end sector (18) of the guide batten in its protective position is bent out, projecting from the guide shaft, by which means the batten is moved to a flush non-use position.
