PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focus controller of an optical disk reproducing system in which a target point of a focus servo is adjusted and set to obtain an optimum focus position for data reading from an optical disk. SOLUTION: The focus controller of an optical disk reproducing system is provided with servo means 13a to 13d, 14a, 14b, 15 to 18 and 12f which generate focus error signals corresponding to the focus deviation of an objective lens 12c based on the signals obtained from the optical pickup 12 and provide the focus servo to the lens 12c and control means 19 and 22 to 26 which move the lens 12c to a focus direction, retrieve the position where the signals obtained by differentiating the signals from the pickup 12 become a maximum and set the retrieved position as the target point of a focus position of the focus servo.
