PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a medium oil which has a high boiling point and a low freezing point, excels in stability, and brings about high reactivity, for example, in the synthesis of dimethyl ether or the like as a medium oil. SOLUTION: The medium oil is used as a medium in the synthesis reaction of a slurry bed reaction system and comprises a 16-50C branched saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having 1-7 tertiary carbons, 0 quaternary carbon, a 1-16C branched chain bonded to the tertiary carbon, and at least one tertiary carbon being bonded to hydrocarbon chains having a≥4C chain length in three directions as the major component.
