PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display in which liquid crystal molecules are oriented with a required pretilt angle without producing any problem in the liquid crystal display in which orientation of the liquid crystal molecules is controlled with a polymer formed in a liquid crystal layer. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display, which is constructed by interposing the liquid crystal layer 26 between two substrates 11 and in which the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules 26a is controlled with the polymer formed in the liquid crystal layer 26, is manufactured by making either or both of a polymerizable monomer 16x and a polymerization initiator 16y, contained in members 16 disposed on the liquid crystal layer 26 side surfaces of the substrates 11, flow into the liquid crystal layer 26 after the liquid crystal layer 26 is sealed in between the substrates 11, and polymerizing the polymerizable monomer 16x in the presence of the polymerizable monomer 16x and the polymerization initiator 16y in the liquid crystal layer 26 so as to control the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules 26a.
