PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a picture display apparatus and picture display method capable of easily correcting the chromaticity and luminance of a screen and the color unevenness and luminance unevenness in the screen without degrading the picture quality in a non self-luminous type which displays a picture on the screen by means of light rays from a plurality of light sources. SOLUTION: The picture display apparatus is provided with four light sources L1-L4 which allow individual adjustment of emitted light quantities of R, G and B light emission bodies respectively, four color sensors S1-S4 which respectively detect R, G and B light quantities with respect to partial areas A1-A4 of different screens from one another, a correlation data memory 24 where a correlation expression between R, G and B detected light quantities of respective color sensors and the R, G and B emitted light quantities of the respective light sources is stored, a light source emitted light quantity calculation section 23 which calculates the R, G and B detected light emission quantities of the respective light sources from the detected light quantities by using the correlation expression and a light source control quantity calculating section 26 which adjusts the R, G and B light emission quantities of the respective light sources based on the detected light emission quantity.
