PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To separate a transfer belt from an image carrier when necessary and to prevent images from being degraded by the separation. SOLUTION: A transfer belt 20 carrying a paper P is pressed to a photosensitive drum 12 being the image carrier by a transfer roll 13. When pressing is released, the transfer belt 20 is separated from the photosensitive drum 12. When being pressed to the photosensitive drum 12 by the transfer roll 13, the transfer belt 20 enters a nip between the photosensitive drum 12 and the transfer roll 13 at an entrance angle of 0 to 5°. The center of the transfer roll 13 is shifted from the center of the photosensitive drum 12 in the downstream side in the moving direction of the transfer belt 20 to reduce the entrance angle at which the transfer belt 20 enters the nip between the photosensitive drum 12 and the transfer roll 13.
