摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the transmission characteristics of wavelength division multiplex transmission with a simple configuration. <P>SOLUTION: Optical transmitters 12-1 to 12-n respectively transmit signal light beams of mutually different wavelengths &lambda;1-&lambda;n. The signal light beams outputted from the optical transmitters 12-1 to 12-n are inputted to a wavelength division multiplex (WDM) apparatus 16 via birefringent fibers 14-1 to 14-n equipped with birefringence characteristics that is temporally varied while depending on a wavelength. The multiplexer 16 multiplexes the signal beams inputted from the birefringent fibers 14-1 to 14-n in a wavelength space, and applies the multiplexed signal beam to a polarization scrambler 18. The polarization scrambler 18 is driven by the driving signal of a predetermined frequency outputted from an oscillator 20 to scramble the polarization of the multiplexed signal beam from the multiplexer 16. The output beam of the polarization scrambler 18 is propagated on an optical transmission line 22 and inputted to an optical receiving apparatus 24. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2005,JPO&NCIPI
