<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high pressure discharge lamp capable of reducing the types of lamp by reducing the fluctuations in light emission characteristics such as efficiency caused by the orientation of lamp lighting, relative color temperature, color rendering, and life by regulating the light-emitting metal material and its filling ratio, and x-y chromaticity, and to provide a lighting device wquipped with the high-pressure discharge lamp. <P>SOLUTION: The high pressure discharge lamp L1 comprises an arc tube 1A which has electrode structures 2A, 2B at both ends of the discharge container 1 forming discharge space and in which a discharge medium containing a metal halide mainly composed Na, Tl, In, Tm and a starting gas are filled, and an outer tube 5 in which the arc tube 1A is arranged. The chrominance variation (duv.) on the x-y chromaticity coordinate (CIE 1931) in the all lighting direction during lamp life is in the range of -0.006 to +0.010, preferably -0.003 to +0.007.
