PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively utilize accumulated energy by absorbing or accumulating instantaneous large regenerative electric power, and to reduce a capacity of a power converter. SOLUTION: The power converter comprises a voltage type self-exciting power converter CNV in which an AC-side terminal is connected to an AC power supply SUP through a transformer TR and an AC reactor Ls, a DC smoothing capacitor Cd connected to a DC-side terminal of the power converter CNV, an energy accumulating device EDLC connected in parallel to the DC smoothing capacitor Cd through a bidirectional chopper CHO, and a load device Load connected in parallel to the DC smoothing capacitor Cd. The energy accumulation device EDLC controls the bidirectional chopper CHO so as to absorb excessive energy if the regenerative power from the load device Load exceeds a set value.
